Friday, 1 December 2017 - Monthly Climate Summary for Western Australia - Product code IDCKGC11R0
Western Australia in November 2017: Very warm November
Daytime temperatures were above average in much of the western half of Western Australia in November and the mean maximum temperature for the State as a whole was above average. Overnight temperatures were above average for much of western and southern WA, and as a result the state-wide averaged mean minimum temperature was eighth-highest on record. It was a dry November for the Lower Southwest (southwest a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), while pockets of above average rainfall were scattered across northern and central WA. The state-wide rainfall was near average overall.
Dry in the Lower Southwest
- Rainfall was near average for WA as a whole; but rainfall was below average for the Lower Southwest
- Regular thunderstorm activity in the Kimberley brought above average rainfall to parts of the district; Mount Elizabeth recorded its wettest November on record
- Thunderstorm activity in inland central parts of WA brought unseasonal rainfall and some sites recorded their wettest November for at least 20 years
- November rainfall totals were mostly less than 10 mm in the Lower Southwest, with several sites recording either their lowest November rainfall on record or lowest for at least 20 years
Warm days and nights in the western WA
- Mean maximum temperature for WA was 1.1 °C above average, which was 17th-highest in November on record though cooler than the past two Novembers
- Mean minimum temperature for WA was 1 °C above average, which was the eighth-highest in November on record
- Mean maximum temperature for the South West Land Division (SWLD) was 2.5 °C above average, which was the sixth-warmest November on record for the SWLD
- Mean minimum temperature for the SWLD was 2.3 °C above average, which was the second-warmest November on record for the SWLD
- Mean minimum temperature for the Lower Southwest was 2.6 °C above average, which was the warmest November for the region
- A few sites in the Lower Southwest registered their warmest November on record in terms of maximum temperature
- Telfer in the inland Pilbara recorded 15 consecutive days with maximum temperatures at 40 °C or higher between the 16th and 30th , which was the longest such hot spell in November at the site for 12 years, since an equal run of 15 days between 16 and 30 November 2005
- Episodes of fresh northeasterly winds over northwest and central WA in late November helped both Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport and Paraburdoo Aerodrome record their warmest November night on record
- Many locations in the Lower Southwest had one of their mildest Novembers on record in terms of minimum temperature

Note:
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site (which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at Perth Regional Office (009034), which ran from 1876 to early 1992. From 2017 on, information about Cocos and Christmas Islands can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica |

Notes
The Monthly climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 December 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
