New South Wales in autumn 2021: cool and wet

Autumn in New South Wales was the coolest since 2012, with below average temperatures across almost all of the state. Nights were 1-2 °C below average for most inland areas. It was the second-wettest March on record for the state, but April and May rainfall was well below average.

Dry end to autumn

  • Autumn in New South Wales started with the second-wettest March on record, at 155% above the 1961–1990 average.
  • Almost all coastal areas experienced very heavy rain over the 17 to 26 March period, and parts of the Upper Western district and Slopes and Plains regions received over three times their average March rainfall.
  • April and May were very dry for most of the state except for some coastal areas.
  • April was the equal eighth-driest on record for the state as a whole, with rain 76% below average.
  • Most regions west of the Divide received less than 5 mm in April and many sites recorded no rain for the month.
  • May rainfall was below average for most areas except the South Coast.
  • Western areas received less than 10 mm of rain during May, 60 to 80% below average.
  • A coastal trough combined with a cold front brought heavy rain to the South Coast region at the start of May.
  • Despite the dry April and May, autumn rainfall was 19% above average for the state overall and the wettest since 2000.
  • Many sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record or their highest for at least 20 years.

Cool days and nights

  • The New South Wales autumn mean temperature was 0.54 °C below the 1961–1990 average, the coolest since 2012.
  • Mean maximum and minimum temperatures were below average in all three months except for May maximum temperature.
  • Autumn daytime temperatures were below average for most of the state except for the far south-west.
  • Night-time temperatures were below average across the state, and 1 to 2 °C below average for most inland areas.
  • Widespread cloud and heavy rain kept March daytime temperatures below average.
  • In contrast, clear skies and dry conditions for much of April and May resulted in many relatively cool nights.
  • Minimum temperatures over 16 to 20 May were over 4 °C below the May average in some inland areas.
  • Nights were even cooler at the end of May, on 30 May several sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record.
  • Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record
  • Some sites had their lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record or their lowest for at least 20 years.

Extreme rainfall and flooding in March

  • Extreme multi-day rainfall and significant flooding affected most of New South Wales over the 17 to 26 March period.
  • This was the result of a blocking high pressure system in the Tasman Sea and a low-pressure system off north-west Australia feeding a large volume of moist tropical air into eastern Australia.
  • Coastal New South Wales, including Sydney, experienced multiple days of heavy rainfall, and the week ending 24 March was the wettest on record for the region.
  • Heavy rainfall over northern inland areas during that period saw New South Wales record its second-wettest day, third-wettest week and second-wettest March on record.
  • Flooding occurred in some inland areas and most coastal catchments, reaching record heights on the Camden Haven and Manning Rivers.
  • The Hawkesbury–Nepean catchment in Sydney experienced its most significant flooding for more than 30 years.
  • Northern Murray–Darling Basin catchments had two of their three largest one-day increases in water storage levels since 1993.
  • Many sites had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record during this event.
  • More information is available in a Special Climate Statement.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 June 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
