New South Wales in autumn 2022: wettest on record for parts of the east coast

Large parts of the state experienced a very wet autumn with many sites recording their wettest autumn on record. The cloudier than usual conditions also led to cooler than average days in the state's east and minimum temperatures being well above average across the state.

A very wet autumn

  • For New South Wales overall, rainfall was 60% above the 1961–1990 average, the seventh-wettest autumn on record (since national records began in 1900) and the wettest autumn since 1990.
  • Most of the state recorded above average rainfall for autumn especially along the coast.
  • Rainfall totals for autumn were more than double their seasonal average in several areas of New South Wales.
  • Many parts of the Sydney Metropolitan district and parts of the Illawarra district had their wettest autumn and March on record.
  • Well above average rainfall was confined to mostly east of the Great Dividing Range in March, shifting to west of the Great Dividing Range in April and May.
  • Many sites had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record, particularly during March.
  • A large number of sites had their highest total autumn rainfall on record or their highest total autumn rainfall for at least 20 years.

Very warm nights

Wet weather systems during autumn

  • The development of low-pressure troughs that subsequently spawned coastal lows was responsible for heavy rainfall over northern and central parts of the coast during March.
  • Coastal lows affected the coast during the first, second and last week of March with daily totals exceeding 100 mm during each event.
  • Following a wet February, this extreme rainfall caused major flooding from the Illawarra Coast up to the Northern Rivers Coast.
  • The passage of low pressure troughs during the end of April and middle of May produced rainfall that was over 2 to 5 times the monthly average for many inland parts of the state.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Thursday 2 June 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
