New South Wales in winter 2022: a very dry June followed by a wetter than average July and August; warm nights

A very dry June across most of the state was followed by the wettest July on record for central parts of the coast, although drier than average for the west and inland south, and a very wet August for central parts of the state. Mean winter maximum and minimum temperatures were close to average, except over the south-eastern quarter of the state where minimum temperatures were above average.

A dry start followed by a wet end

  • For the state as a whole, winter rainfall was 3% above the 1961–1990 average.
  • A very dry June for the state was followed by a wettest on record July for central parts of the coast and a very wet August for central parts of the state.
  • During June, it was particularly dry over central parts of the state extending from the Upper Western to the Central Tablelands, as well as on and eastwards of the Great Dividing Range. In these areas, monthly rainfall totals for many sites were less than 20% of their average June total.
  • Record-high July rainfall over central parts of the coast were a result of the development of an East Coast Low during the first week of the month.
  • The intense rainfall resulted in major flooding, with more than 85,000 people being displaced or ordered to evacuate while the New South Wales SES responded to more than 370 flood rescues and 7,600 requests for assistance.
  • A vigorous cold front with embedded thunderstorms that crossed the state on the 4th August was largely responsible for the very much above average monthly rainfall totals observed over central parts of the state during August.
  • A large number of sites had their highest winter daily rainfall on record during either of these two events.
  • Some sites had their highest total winter rainfall on record or their highest total winter rainfall for at least 20 years.

Warmer than average nights

Snowfall during winter

  • The season saw early snowfall with Spencers Creek recording over 60 cm of snow in the first week of June, following an additional 30 cm of snow that fell at the end of May.
  • Snowfall in July was relatively light though snow depth grew in August so that by the end of the season, snow depths were above average.
  • Over the night of the 23rd, several centimetres of snow settled across the Blue Mountains and around Orange, closing roads and delaying trains with ice on the tracks, the first snowfalls in the Blue Mountains this winter.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Friday 2 September 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
