New South Wales in spring 2022: wettest on record

It was the wettest spring on record since 1900 for New South Wales, with rainfall inland of the Dividing Range 2 to 4 times the spring average. The rain fell on saturated ground and full catchments, leading to ongoing major flooding. Spring daytime temperatures were the coolest since 1976, and the mean temperature for the state overall was the coolest since 1992.

Wettest on record

  • It was the wettest spring on record for New South Wales since analyses started in 1900.
  • For the state overall, the total spring rainfall of 302.9 mm was 136% above the 1961–1990 average, exceeding the previous spring record of 260.8 mm in 2010.
  • Rainfall for almost all areas inland of the Dividing Range was 2 to 4 times the spring average.
  • It was the fifth-wettest September on record for the state.
  • The total October rainfall for the state of 146.5 mm was a new monthly record and the fifth-highest total for any month since 1900.
  • November rainfall for many inland areas was very much above average (wettest 10% of all Novembers since 1900) but very much below average in the Northern Rivers district.
  • Many sites had their highest total spring rainfall on record or their highest for at least 20 years.
  • For more information on monthly rainfall and significant weather see the September, October, and November climate summaries.

Coolest since 1992

Heavy rain and ongoing flooding

  • There were periods of heavy rain across the Murray–Darling Basin throughout spring, as moist air was drawn down from the tropics and interacted with the passage of cold fronts.
  • Many sites had their highest spring daily rainfall on record.
  • The Murray–Darling Basin had its wettest spring on record, with the area-average total of 295.1 mm exceeding the previous record of 251.1 mm in 2010.
  • The heavy rain fell on saturated soils and already-full catchments, causing widespread major riverine flooding in the Murray–Darling Basin throughout spring.
  • Floodwaters moved downstream in the Murray–Darling Basin and, by the end of November, towns affected by major flooding included Brewarrina, Bourke, Condobolin, Euabalong, Hillston, Hay, Balranald, and Wentworth.
  • A Special Climate Statement on the ongoing floods is being prepared and will be published in due course.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, usually published in the first week of the following month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 6 pm on Friday 2 December 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
