New South Wales in summer 2022–23: Coolest summer nights on records for parts of the state

Summer 2022–23 was drier than average, especially for the north-east. Minimum temperatures were cooler than average, especially during December and for central and north-east parts of the state.

Drier than average, especially for the north-east

• The New South Wales area-averaged rainfall total for summer was 108.1 mm, which was 36% below the 1961–1990 average.
• Rainfall was below average for the parts of the Riverina along the border with Victoria
• Rainfall was very much below average (driest 10% of summers since 1900-01) in parts of the Northern Tablelands and Northern Rivers.
• February was a particularly dry month with the state-averaged rainfall total being 56% below the 1961–1990 average.
• Several sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record on 30 January or 9 February from intense storm activity.

Cooler than average days, especially during December

• The New South Wales area-averaged maximum temperature for summer 2022–23 was 0.29 °C above the 1961–1990 average.
• The far northwest had mean daily maximum temperatures warmer than average while temperatures were cooler than average around the Snowy Mountains (up to around 2° C cooler than average).
• The New South Wales area-averaged minimum temperature for summer 2022–23 was 0.61 °C below the 1961–1990 average, the coolest summer since 1995–96.
• Mean daily minimum temperatures were cooler than average for most of the state apart from the Far West and along the southern and central coasts.
• Central and north-east parts of the state had mean daily minimum temperatures for summer in the bottom 10% of historical records (since 1910–11) including some areas where temperatures were coolest on record.
• December was particularly cooler than average with the state-averaged minimum temperature being the equal seventh-coolest (since 1910–11) and the coolest since 1964.
• A few coastal sites had their coldest summer day (lowest maximum temperature) on record.
• Bombala (Therry Street) had its lowest summer mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
• Many sites had their lowest summer temperature on record.
• Three sites had their warmest summer night (highest daily minimum temperature) on record.
• Many sites had their lowest summer mean daily minimum temperature on record or their lowest summer mean daily minimum temperature for at least 20 years.
• A few sites had their lowest summer mean temperature on record or their lowest summer mean temperature for at least 20 years.
