New South Wales in winter 2016: Warmest winter nights since 1973

Winter 2016 was warm and wet across New South Wales, with the third-highest rainfall and the equal-highest average minimum temperatures on record for the State. An East Coast Low produced particularly heavy rain in early June, with several cold fronts and low pressure systems causing severe weather throughout the season.

Third-wettest winter on record

  • Statewide average rainfall was 85% above average and the third-highest on record for winter, following 1998 and 1950.
  • Rainfall was well above average across most of the State, with several stations including Cobar and Griffith recording their wettest winter on record
  • An East Coast Low caused very heavy rain and severe weather on the east coast in early June, with numerous winter daily rainfall records broken between the 4th and 6th, including the wettest day on record for the NSW coast
  • Heavy rainfall also affected large areas of the State on 18-20 June, 20 July, and 3-4 and 24-25 August

Warm nights across the State

  • Statewide average minimum temperatures were 1.7 °C above average, the equal-warmest winter on record with 1973
  • Minimum temperatures were well above average across most of the State, and the warmest on record at several stations
  • Maximum temperatures were close to average for the State, with well above average temperatures along the coast but average to below average temperatures west of the Great Dividing Range
  • Some stations had their coldest winter day on record at the end of June
  • A warm spell broke temperature records during mid-July, with some stations recording their warmest winter night on record
  • The Statewide average temperature during winter was consequently 0.9 °C above average, the tenth-warmest on record

Severe weather

  • An East Coast Low caused widespread heavy rain, flooding, strong winds and erosion along the New South Wales coast in early June. For more information see Special Climate Statement 57: Extensive early June rainfall affecting the Australian east coast
  • East Coast Lows also caused severe weather on 20 June and 3-4 August, with a fast-moving low pressure system also causing further severe weather on 25-26 August
  • Cold fronts produced strong winds during 12-13 and 22-23 July, with snow settling in some low-altitude areas including Canberra on the 13th

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 September 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
