New South Wales in winter 2017: warm days, cold nights and a very dry season

Winter 2017 saw below average rainfall across almost all of New South Wales. The State received around half of its average winter rainfall during 2017, for its ninth-driest winter on record. Clear skies meant above average maximum temperatures and colder than average minimums in many regions. Averaged over the State, maximum temperatures were the third-warmest on record, while minimum temperatures were the lowest since 1997.

A dry start in the south, finishing dry in the north

  • Rainfall in winter 2017 was below average for New South Wales: southern inland New South Wales was especially dry in June, while western and northeastern areas of the State received below average rainfall in July and August
  • Overall it was New South Wales' ninth-driest winter on record, and the driest winter since 2002
  • A small pocket of the northeast coast was the only area to receive above average rainfall for winter, largely due to good rains in June
  • Several stations in the Western and Central West Slopes and Plains districts reported their driest winter on record
  • After a slow start to the snow season, snow depth in Alpine areas rose during August; Spencer's Creek finished August with 189 cm of snow, the highest total since 2012

Warm days, cold nights

  • Maximum temperatures were above average across nearly the entire State; a number of stations in the Central Tablelands and Central West Slopes and Plains districts had their warmest mean winter days on record
  • It was the third-warmest winter on record for New South Wales in terms of maximum temperature: 1.59 °C above average, the warmest since 2013
  • The warm conditions were associated with higher than average atmospheric pressure (particularly in June), but occurred without an El Niño event; El Niño conditions are usually associated with higher than average maximum temperatures during winter and spring in western New South Wales
  • Warm temperatures and below average rainfall contributed to higher than average fire danger across the State for winter; the Rural Fire Service has brought forward the start of the bushfire danger period to 1 September in nine eastern local government areas
  • Minimum temperatures in contrast were below average across southern and central New South Wales, due in part to clear skies and cold air masses from southern latitudes delivered cold overnight conditions throughout the season
  • Averaged over the State, minimum temperatures were 0.46 °C below average, the coolest since 1997
  • Several stations in the Riverina and Central West Slopes and Plains districts recorded their coldest mean winter nights on record
  • Frosty conditions were prevalent inland, with stations including Cobar, Corowa and Wilcannia experiencing a record or near record number of overnight temperatures below 2 °C

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Friday 1 September 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
