New South Wales in spring 2018: warm, with rain in some areas

After a series of dry seasons, at least some parts of New South Wales had a wet spring, although many areas were again dry. Temperatures were above average for almost the whole State, with nights especially warm in the northeast.

Significant rain for some areas, dry continues in others

  • Rainfall was above average in the northeast (in particular the Northern Rivers), around Sydney, and in some parts of the west
  • Spring rainfall totals were below average over the Southwest Slopes, the Southern Tablelands, the Northwest, and along the Victorian border; a few sites had their wettest spring or their wettest for several decades
  • Spring has seen an easing of medium-term rainfall deficiencies in some areas of New South Wales, but longer-term deficiencies remain across much of the State
  • Total rainfall for New South Wales was about 6% below average
  • A low pressure system late in November brought moderate to heavy falls to Sydney, the Illawarra, the Hunter and the Central Tablelands, with some locations around Sydney reporting more than 100 mm of rain in less than three hours; a few sites with relatively short records had their highest spring daily rainfall on record

Warm for most of the State

  • Minimum temperatures were above average for most of the State, very much above average in the northeast quarter and record warm over the Northwest Slopes; some sites had their highest spring mean daily minimum temperature on record or their warmest for several decades
  • Some sites had their warmest spring night on record early in November
  • Minimum temperatures were below average in regions along the borders with South Australia and Victoria
  • The State's mean minimum temperature was the fifth-warmest for spring at 1.35 °C above average
  • Maximum temperatures were above average for almost the whole State, especially over the Riverina and the western Slopes and Plains, although closer to average along east of the Great Dividing Range and in the far west
  • Daytime temperatures at sites on the North Coast were generally cooler than average
  • The State's mean maximum temperature for spring was 1.65 °C above average
  • The State's overall mean temperature for spring was 1.50 °C above average; cooler than spring 2017, but much warmer than spring 2016

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 December 2018. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
