New South Wales in spring 2015: Second-warmest spring on record

Spring was the second-warmest on record for mean temperatures in New South Wales, with well above average temperatures in November and an exceptionally warm October. The first half of the season was dry, but above average rainfall in November resulted in near-average totals for the season as a whole.

  • Second-warmest spring on record for mean temperatures
  • Heatwaves set early-season temperature records
  • Below average rainfall but wet November

New South Wales recorded its second-warmest spring on record for mean temperatures during 2015, and the warmest spring since 1914. Both maximum (+2.9 °C) and minimum (+1.7 °C) temperatures were among the five warmest years on record for the state as a whole, largely a result of exceptionally warm temperatures during October, which broke the previous monthly record by almost 2 °C. Temperatures were also well above average during November, but closer to average during September, which recorded the coolest mean minimum temperature for the state since 1994.

Temperatures were well above average across the state, but particularly in the southeast where several stations recorded their warmest mean or mean minimum temperatures on record. There were several notable heatwaves during the season, with a significant heatwave in the first week of October breaking numerous records for early-season heat (see Special Climate Statement 52).

The statewide average rainfall was 17% below the historical average during spring, with below average totals in parts of the southeast and far west but close to average totals elsewhere. Rainfall was below average during September and October but well above average during November, with much of the rain falling associated with a series of surface troughs and thunderstorms during the first part of November, as well as locally heavy thunderstorms during the end of October.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Tuesday 1 December 2015. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
