- Four of the 7 months of the wet season saw above average rainfall across the Territory, starting with an unusually wet October as La Niña became established in the Pacific Ocean.
- December saw an early monsoon onset at Darwin on the 19th, and the associated rain saw the Territory have its fifth-wettest December on record.
- A relatively dry start to January 2021 was followed by a monsoon burst late in the month, although rainfall was 20% below average overall for the month.
- Monsoonal conditions continued into early February, leading to above average rainfall.
- While rainfall in the northern half of the Territory was below average during March, tropical low activity affected southern and western areas, leading to slightly above average rainfall for the month.
- The final month of the wet season saw mostly dry conditions during April, with no monsoonal activity affecting the Territory.
- Two sites had their highest total October to April rainfall on record; several other sites had their highest October to April daily rainfall on record.
Warm days and nights in the north
- Overall, both daytime and night-time temperatures across the Territory were marginally above the long-term average; the mean maximum temperature was 0.34 °C above average while the mean minimum temperature was 0.78 °C above average.
- Daytime temperatures were somewhat above average across the Top End and over the eastern half, south of the Top End; elsewhere it was close to average, although parts of the south-west had cooler than average days.
- Much of the northern and eastern Territory had above average night-time temperatures, with the south-west region seeing close to average night-time temperatures.
- Several sites in the south-western Territory had their coldest October to April day on record, associated with widespread rainfall in early October.
- Temperatures for the individual months of the wet season were generally close to average, apart from November and December.
- The influence of La Niña was weaker during November 2020, contributing to the warmest November on record for the Territory for maximum, minimum and mean temperature.
- December was much cooler than average, related to the widespread rainfall, with the mean maximum temperature 1.70 °C below average, the lowest for December since 2000.
- Some sites had their lowest October to April temperature on record.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Northern Territory using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 4 May 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
