Queensland in spring 2014: Dry over large parts of the State; some extremely hot days

Rainfall during spring 2014 was well below average in northern Queensland, through the central west and along the southern border. Some areas in the eastern Darling Downs, southeast, and north tropical tablelands received their lowest spring rainfall on record. A large area in the Capricornia and Central Highlands districts which received near-average spring rainfall. Average rainfall was also recorded in areas of the western Gulf Country and the far southwest.

Severe thunderstorms emerged in late spring, with the most severe occurring on 27 November in southeast Queensland, causing major structural damage across the Brisbane CBD and numerous surrounding suburbs. Earlier on 19 November, a severe thunderstorm caused heavy rainfall leading to flash-flooding in Brisbane suburbs.

Temperatures were exceptionally warm during spring, with several periods of extended hot days and warm nights occurring through the season, affecting the central west, southern and southeast Queensland. Numerous temperature records were broken: in October on the 26th and 27th; and in November on the 15th and 16th, then again on the 22nd and 23rd. Longreach reported 13 consecutive days with temperatures equal to or above 40°C (13 to 25 November), breaking the previous November record of 9 days (set over 1 to 9 November, 1965).

For spring as a whole, maximum temperatures were 2 °C to 3 °C above average west of a line from about Mt Isa in the northwest, through the central interior near Longreach to the Darling Downs in the southeast. Near-average daytime temperatures were recorded along parts of the east coast between about Innisfail and Maryborough and through parts of the Central Highlands. Minimum temperatures were well above average across southern and central Queensland and near-average to below average in the north and on the central east coast. Record high daily minimum temperatures were also recorded across the Darling Downs in mid-November. Longreach in the central west recorded its warmest spring nights.

  • Damaging thunderstorms in November
  • 13th-lowest spring rainfall averaged across the State
  • Fourth-highest maximum temperatures
  • Equal third-warmest mean temperature
  • 11th-warmest overnight temperatures

Notes

A Seasonal Climate Summary is prepared to list the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review, usually published in the fourth week of the month.

A Climate Summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 1 December 2014. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
