Tasmania had a very warm autumn overall, with the State's mean temperature the fifth-warmest on record. Rainfall was below average overall, especially in the west.
Temperatures well above average
- Tasmania's mean temperature for autumn was 0.84 °C above average, the fifth-warmest autumn on record (but a little cooler than autumn 2016)
- Temperatures were unseasonably warm on 22 May, with 21.1°C at Hobart Airport the warmest temperature ever recorded there so late in the autumn
- Overall, daytime temperatures were well above average across Tasmania, with some sites (mostly in the west) having their highest autumn mean daily maximum temperature on record
- The State mean maximum temperature was 0.95 °C above average, the eighth-warmest autumn on record (and a little warmer than autumn 2016)
- The morning of 16 March was especially warm, with several sites reporting their highest autumn daily minimum temperature on record on that day
- Overnight temperatures were well above average, with a few sites (especially in the northwest) having their highest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record
- The State mean minimum temperature was 0.72 °C above average, the equal eighth-warmest autumn on record (but almost half a degree cooler than autumn 2016)
- Despite the generally mild autumn, there were some cold nights and cool days scattered through the season: some sites reported mornings below -4 °C on 3 April, 4 May and 31 May; whilst 30 May was the coldest autumn day for many years in some places
Rain below average, especially in the west
- Rainfall was below average over much of Tasmania during autumn, with the southwest highlands well below average
- Total rain for the State was 25% below the autumn average; much drier than the wet autumn 2016 (which was mostly the result of a the very wet May 2016)
A mild, dry autumn for Hobart
- Hobart's mean daily maximum temperature of 18.8 °C was 1.5 °C above the long-term average for autumn
- Hobart's warmest day this autumn was 32.1 °C on 14 March; at the other extreme it reached just 9.0 °C on 30 May (Hobart's coldest autumn day in 17 years)
- Hobart's mean daily minimum temperature of 10.1 °C was 1.1 °C above the long-term average for autumn, with nights as cold as 3.3 °C (on 27 April) but not dropping below 20.7 °C on 16 March

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 12 pm on Thursday 1 June 2017. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
From 2017, information about Macquarie Island can be found in the climate summary for the Remote Islands and Antarctica
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
