Tasmania in autumn 2021: drier than average for parts of the north

Autumn rainfall was below to very much below average across the central north and parts of central Tasmania, but close to average elsewhere. Days were warmer than average for all but the north-west coast, and nights were warmer than average across the south and north-west.

Drier season overall after a wet start

  • Averaged across the state, rainfall was 10% below the autumn average of 335 mm.
  • It was Tasmania's lowest autumn rainfall since 2017.
  • A small area of the north had rainfall in the driest 10% of records, but autumn totals were close to average across the south and along both the east and west coasts.
  • The state's highest daily rainfall this autumn, 295.4 mm, was recorded at Gray (Haven of Hope) on 25 March when a low pressure system brought heavy rainfall and strong winds to the East Coast district. A couple of sites in the east had their highest autumn daily rainfall on record with this event.
  • Heavy rain along the east coast towards the end of March resulted in a wetter than average month, with average to above average rainfall for the rest of the state in March. April was drier than average across the north-east but wetter than average for parts of the south-west. May was drier than average across most of Tasmania.
  • Hartz Mountain (Keoghs Pimple) had their highest total autumn rainfall on record.

Warmer than average in most parts

  • Averaged across the state, the mean maximum temperature was only 0.07 °C higher than average, but still warmer than autumn 2020.
  • Averaged across the state, the mean minimum temperature was close to average and the coolest since 2015.
  • The mean maximum temperatures for autumn were warmer than average across all but the north-west, while mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average across the south and the north-west.
  • Mean maximum temperatures were average to above average across the state for each month of autumn, while mean minimum temperatures were warmer than average across the state in March, across the south in April, and then close to average for most areas during May.
  • Some sites had their lowest autumn temperature on record at the end of the season thanks to a high pressure system centred over south-eastern Australia.
  • Ross (The Boulevards) had their lowest autumn mean daily minimum temperature on record

Hobart (Ellerslie Road)

  • Total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 96.0 mm, which is 68% of the long-term average of 141.5 mm.
  • The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 18.5 °C, which is 1.2 °C above the long-term average of 17.3 °C.
  • The warmest day was 32.3 °C on 3 April, and the coolest day was on 20 April when the temperature reached 10.2 °C.
  • The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 9.8 °C, which is 0.8 °C above the long-term average of 9.0 °C.
  • The coldest morning was 2.0 °C on 21 April, and the warmest morning was on 13 March when the minimum temperature was 16.4 °C.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 June 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
