Western Australia in summer 2019-20: record warm nights

Western Australia mean temperature in summer 2019–20 was the second–highest on record. The State mean minimum and maximum temperatures also ranked the highest and fifth–highest for summer on record respectively. Tropical cyclones Blake and Damien brought heavy falls to parts of the Pilbara, east Gascoyne and State's interior. Summer rainfall was slightly above average for the State as a whole.

Wet in the Pilbara and interior

  • Above average to very much above average rainfall in parts of the Pilbara, east Gascoyne and the State's interior due to tropical cyclones Blake and Damien
  • The far northwest corner of WA experienced another dry summer following a poor season in 2018-19; Learmonth Airport recorded 0.2 mm this summer but zero rain last season
  • WA rainfall in summer 2019–20 was 9% above average, which was wetter than last summer
  • Tropical cyclone Blake produced a number of summer daily rainfall records in the Pilbara and Southern Interior on 9 and 10 January
  • Youno Downs and Bryah in the east Gascoyne had their wettest summer day on 16 January from thunderstorms and 16 February from the remnant of tropical cyclone Damien

Very warm days and nights for most of WA

  • Daytime temperatures were above to very much above average across most of WA, with record high maxima in southern coastal areas
  • WA summer mean maximum temperature was 1.91 °C above average, making it the fifth–warmest summer on record
  • Overnight temperatures were above average across WA, and about 90 percent of the State had very much above average mean minimum temperatures (decile 10)
  • WA summer mean minimum temperature was 1.38 °C above average, making it the highest for summer on record
  • December 2019 was a record hot month, and each of the State mean temperature, maximum and minimum temperature was the highest in December on record
  • Some sites in the State's southeast and the Kimberley had their hottest summer day on record and warmest summer night on record in December
  • Eucla recorded 49.8 °C on 19 December, which was the State highest temperature for 22 years since 21 February 1998 when 49.8 °C was recorded at Emu Creek Station
  • Telfer Aero in the east Pilbara recorded a minimum temperature of 35.1 °C on 29 December, which was the State highest minimum temperature since 21 February 2015 when 35.1 °C was recorded at Wittenoom

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Tuesday 3 March 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
