Western Australia in summer 2022-23: Wet in the Kimberley

Summer rainfall was above average in the Kimberley, adjacent Northern Interior, and in pockets of the west Pilbara and east Gascoyne. It was the tenth-wettest summer on record, and the wettest since summer 2017–2018 for the Kimberley district as a whole. In contrast, the South West Land Division, and parts of the state's south-east recorded below average rainfall. It was the driest summer for the lower southwestern region..

Most of the state's western half and central Goldfields observed warmer than normal daytime temperatures, while the northeastern parts of the state and the South East Coastal District recorded cooler than normal maximum temperatures. A broad area from the northwest to the southeast of the state, as well as a coastal trip of the Lower West District observed warmer than normal overnight temperatures. In contrast, much of the southern Kimberley and the eastern parts of the Northern Interior experienced cooler than normal minimum temperatures. For the state as a whole, the mean maximum and minimum temperatures were above the 1961-1990 average respectively.

  • Summer rainfall was 19% above the 1961–1990 average for Western Australia as a whole.
  • Summer was wet in the Kimberley, adjacent Northern Interior, and pockets of the west Pilbara and east Gascoyne.

  • A number of sites in the Kimberley had their wettest summer on record or wettest summer rainfall for more than 20 years.
  • Mount Winifred and Old Mornington Homestead reported their annual highest daily rainfall on record on 2 January, associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie.
  • The South West Land Division (SWLD), and parts of the state's south-east saw below average rainfall this summer, even though summer is a typical dry season in the SWLD.
  • For the lower southwest (roughly southwest a line between Jurien Bay and Bremer Bay) as a whole, it was the fourth-driest summer on record and driest since 1997–1998.
  • For the SWLD as a whole, it was the 14th-driest summer on record and driest since 2018–2019.
  • The western and central SWLD and the Gascoyne coast reported summer rainfall totals of either zero or less than 10 mm.

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 pm on Thursday 2 March 2023. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
