Queensland in 2022: record rainfall in the south-east; warmer in the tropics, cooler days across the south

Rainfall for 2022 was above average or very much above average across most of the state, with parts of the south-east reporting the wettest year on record since 1900. For the state overall it was the wettest year since 2011. Both daytime and night-time temperatures were above average in the tropics, with parts of the Cape York Peninsula having annual mean maximum temperatures in the highest 10% of historical records for since 1910. In contrast, southern regions had below average mean maximum temperatures, but average to above average mean minimum temperatures.

Record rainfall in the south-east

  • Rainfall for 2022 was above to very much above average across most of Queensland, and the highest on record in the south-east of the state.
  • The state-averaged rainfall in 2022 was 778 mm which was 25% above the 1961-1990 average, and the highest since 2011.
  • Small parts of the Capricornia and Central Coast districts had below average rainfall for the year, despite above average rainfall during spring.
  • Extreme multi-day rainfall and significant flooding affected south-eastern Queensland in late February, with many locations reporting their highest daily rainfall on record.
  • The wettest day for any location in the state was on January 8, when 510 mm of rainfall was recorded at Marodian Homestead in the south-east of the state. Although, some non-Bureau operated rainfall sites reported falls in excess of 600 mm on the this day.
  • Many locations in the southeast of the state had their highest annual total rainfall on record or their highest annual total rainfall for at least 20 years.

Warmer in the north, cooler days in the south

  • The mean maximum temperature for Queensland was 0.29 °C above the 1961-1990 average; the lowest for annual mean maximum temperature since 2011.
  • Daytime temperatures were warmer than average across northern Queensland with much of the area north of a line from Burketown in the Gulf Country to Townsville on the east coast in the highest 10% of historical records for since 1910.
  • In contrast, mean maximum temperatures were cooler than average across southern parts of the state, with large areas across the southern interior in the lowest 10% of records since 1910.
  • Daytime temperatures were above average for the tropical north throughout many months of the year where some sites reported their highest temperature on record Cairns on the north tropical coast, and Kowanyama on the western Cape York Peninsula both reported their equal-highest mean daily maximum temperature on record.
  • In contrast to warmer than average days in the north of the state, daytime temperatures were below average in southern districts, and resulted in several locations in the south-east quadrant of the state having their lowest mean daily maximum temperature on record or their lowest mean daily maximum temperature for at least 20 years.
  • Widespread, cooler than average days during the start of July resulted in several locations reporting their coldest day on record on 4 or 5 July, and Hamilton Island had its coldest night on record on 6 July.
  • The state-wide mean minimum temperature was 1.17 °C above the 1961-1990 average; the tenth-warmest annual mean minimum temperature since 1910.
  • Night-time temperatures were warmer than average for most of the state and in the highest 10% of historical records since 1910 across the north and in pockets of the east coast.
  • Large areas across the southeast experienced very warm nights in the month of March and several locations reported their warmest night on record.
  • Persistently warm nights across the tropical north throughout the year resulted in Coconut Island reporting its equal highest mean daily minimum temperature and Willis Island having its highest mean daily minimum temperature on record and Willis Island also had its highest mean temperature on record.
  • In contrast to warmer than average nights in the north, Cape Moreton Lighthouse had its equal-lowest mean daily minimum temperature since 1992.
  • With particularly cooler than average days, and milder nights across southern districts throughout the year, some sites equaled their lowest mean temperature on record or had their lowest mean temperature for at least 20 years.

Notes

The Annual climate summary, lists the main features of the weather in Queensland using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Wednesday 25 January 2023. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.

Information about Australian Indigenous seasonal calendars is available at the Indigenous Weather Knowledge website.
