Tasmania in 2021: warmer than average statewide, typical rainfall totals for most areas
Days and nights were warmer than average across most of the state during 2021. Rainfall was near-average for most areas, with wetter than average patches in the east and Bass Strait, and below average rainfall in the west.
Near-average rainfall overall
- Tasmania's total rainfall for the year was only 1% above the 1961–1990 average, but it was still the wettest year since 2016.
- Parts of the east coast and Bass Strait were wetter than average; in contrast, parts of the north-west and south-west were drier than average.
- July was very dry along the east coast, with a patch of driest on record, but wetter than average across the west and north.
- October was wettest on record for parts of the east and eighth-wettest on record for the state.
- December was the sixth-driest on record for Tasmania.
- The highest daily rainfall total during the year, 295.4 mm, was recorded at Gray (Haven of Hope) on 25 March; this was the fifth-highest daily rainfall total on record for Tasmania for any month and the third-highest for March.
- With 3595.6 mm for the year, Mount Read was the wettest site in Tasmania.
- A couple of sites had their highest daily rainfall on record on 6 February when a complex low pressure system, cold front and pre-frontal trough tracked over Tasmania, resulting in flash flooding and more than 70 calls for assistance to the State Emergency Service (SES).
Another warmer year
- The state's annual mean temperature was 0.39 °C warmer than average, the highest since 2019.
- It has been 15 years since Tasmania has had an annual mean temperature below the 1961–90 average.
- For Tasmania as a whole, the annual mean maximum temperature was 0.42 °C warmer than average and the highest since 2019.
- In June, July, and August, days were warmer than average across Tasmania; winter 2021 was the ninth-warmest on record for maximum temperatures. December days were also warmer than average across the state.
- Tasmania's annual mean minimum temperature was 0.34 °C warmer than average and the highest since 2018.
- Mean minimum temperatures were in the warmest 10% of historical records along the east coast and the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait.
- Nights were much warmer than average during June (fifth-warmest on record), August, and October (equal sixth-warmest on record).
Hobart (Ellerslie Road)
- The estimated total rainfall for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 666.0 mm, which is 109% of the long-term average of 612.2 mm.
- Hobart Airport had its wettest October on record, while Hobart (Ellerslie Road) had its third-wettest on record and its wettest October since 1947.
- The mean daily maximum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 17.7 °C, which is 0.7 °C above the long-term average of 17.0 °C.
- The warmest day was 37.5 °C on 25 January, and the coolest day was on 22 June when the temperature reached 8.7 °C.
- The mean daily minimum temperature for Hobart (Ellerslie Road) was 9.2 °C, which is 0.8 °C above the long-term average of 8.4 °C.
- The coldest morning was 0.2 °C on 7 July, and the warmest morning was on 25 January when the minimum temperature was 18.4 °C.
- In June, Hobart had 5 consecutive nights from the 11th to the 15th when the temperature did not fall below 10 °C; a new record for June and an equal record for winter.

Notes
The Annual climate summary, generally published on the second working day of the year, lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 3 pm on Thursday 20 January 2022. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
