New South Wales in summer 2018-19: record warm summer; very dry

Summer 2018-19 in New South Wales was the warmest on record. The statewide mean, maximum and minimum temperatures all exceeded previous records by more than half a degree. The State experienced several heatwave events and three consecutive months of warmer than average temperatures. It was the tenth-driest summer on record for the State as a whole.

Record warm summer

  • Statewide, the mean, maximum and minimum temperature for summer were all highest on record, with the largest positive anomalies reported for any State (or Territory) for any season
  • New South Wales' mean temperature for summer was 3.41 ºC above average, exceeding the previous record of +2.67 ºC from summer 2016-17
  • Mean, maximum and minimum temperatures across the State in December and January were the warmest on record (except December mean maximum temperature was second-warmest on record), while February were still warmer than average just not as extreme
  • The State's mean maximum temperature for summer was 3.61 ºC above average (previous record was +3.05 ºC for summer 2016-17)
  • A low pressure system produced a particularly cool day in the State's central west regions and some sites experienced their coldest summer day (lowest maximum temperature) on record on 14 December
  • Heatwaves during January saw many records broken, leading to numerous sites having their warmest summer daytime temperature on record and their warmest summer night on record
  • Many sites across the State, mostly west of the Great Dividing Range, had their warmest summer on record, mostly because of their record mean daily maximum temperature with many also having their highest mean daily minimum temperature on record
  • Statewide, summer mean minimum temperature was 3.21 ºC above average (previous record was +2.33 ºC for summer 1980-81)
  • The highest minimum temperature ever recorded anywhere in Australia occurred at Wanaaring (Borrona Downs) with 36.6 ºC on 26 January

Very dry across the north

  • Overall, summer rainfall was 48% below the long-term average for New South Wales and tenth-driest on record (driest summer since 1984-85)
  • The northern two-thirds of the State recorded very much below average rainfall and the northeast recorded little or no rain during the season
  • A few small areas scattered through the southeast quadrant saw above average rainfall as a result of moderate to heavy falls from thunderstorms
  • An isolated thunderstorm on the 17 December generated heavy falls in excess of 200 mm around the Lower North Coast and some sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record
  • Numerous sites had their lowest total summer rainfall on record or their lowest total summer rainfall for at least 20 years

Dust storms, fires and severe thunderstorms

  • Persistent dry conditions and strong winds led to numerous dust storms across the State during summer with notable events including: 31 December over Central West Slopes and Plains district, 8 January across the Riverina district, and 12 February across most of the State causing poor air quality in the Illawarra and South West Slopes regions
  • Fires during February through the State's northeastern districts (one in Tingha and another in Tabulam) burnt through more than 30 000 hectares; there were 13 homes and 44 outbuildings lost
  • On the 20 December, severe thunderstorms across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Central Coast regions generated damaging winds and giant hail
  • Numerous severe thunderstorms affected the State during January and February producing heavy falls and strong winds including on 8 February, Greater Sydney experienced flash flooding as a severe thunderstorm swept across the city

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am on Friday 1 March 2019. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
