New South Wales in summer 2019-20: wet in the east, very hot at times

Rainfall over summer was above average in many coastal regions of New South Wales, but the season was drier than average in the State's west. Daytime temperatures for summer were warmer than average across New South Wales and very much above average over large areas of the State's north and east. Night-time temperatures were very much above average over most of New South Wales, including areas of highest on record, but closer to average in the southwest.

Rainfall above average in the east, but dry in the west

  • Rainfall in summer was above average in many coastal regions, but the season was drier than average in the State's west
  • Summer began with the State's second-driest December on record, and January continued a run of ten consecutive months of below average rainfall for New South Wales as a whole
  • In February, a succession of low pressure systems resulted in very much above average rainfall along the coast, with some areas having their wettest February on record
  • On 10 February, many sites had their highest summer daily rainfall on record
  • Numerous sites around Sydney had their wettest four-day period on record, some for any time of the year
  • Sydney (Observatory Hill) recorded 391.6 mm between 7 and 10 February, its wettest four-day period for any time of the year since 1990 (414.2 mm from 2–5 February 1990)
  • The western half of the State had generally less than 50 mm for the whole season, with large areas drier than average
  • Rainfall for summer was 10% below average for New South Wales as a whole
  • The wettest location was at Yarras (Mount Seaview) inland of Port Macquarie, with 1325.8 mm recorded for the season
  • Many sites, mostly in coastal regions, had either their highest total summer rainfall on record or their highest total summer rainfall since 1991 or earlier

Warmer than average summer, despite cool days in February

Dust and smoke

  • Bushfire smoke and raised dust affected the Sydney basin and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) for much of December and January
  • Raised dust fell as dirty brown rain over the Sydney basin on 24 January
  • There were strong winds at times, with 128 km/h at Cabramurra on 4 January the State's strongest recorded wind gust for the season

Notes

The Seasonal climate summary, generally published on the first working day of each month, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 2 March 2020. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
