Tuesday, 1 March 2016 - Seasonal Climate Summary for Tasmania - Product code IDCKGC27R0
Tasmania in summer 2015-16: record warm, record rain in the northeast, relatively dry in the west
Tasmania had its warmest summer on record in 2015-16, with the statewide mean temperature 1.78 °C above average. There was little rain for most of the summer, but there was record rain in the north and northeast at the end of January. Fires that started in the west after lightning in the middle of January continued for the rest of the season.
- Record warm mean temperatures
- Persistently mild weather, with very few cold days
- Rain below average in the west and south
- Exceptional rain in the north and east at the end of January
- Record warm waters near the State
Temperatures were persistently mild across Tasmania through summer, with relatively few cold days or nights. The result was a statewide mean temperature that was a record 1.78 °C above average, almost half a degree warmer than the previous record from 1981 and 1961. The statewide mean daily maximum temperature was the second-warmest on record at 1.89 °C above average, and the mean daily minimum was warmest on record at 1.67 °C above average. Records for high mean daily maximum were set by many sites, mostly in the north, whilst mean daily minimum records were also set by many sites, mostly in the east. Consequently, many individual sites (including Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Strahan) had their highest summer mean temperature on record. Even though conditions were generally warm, there were relatively few especially hot days; the hottest was 39.8 °C at Friendly Beaches on 20 December. There were some cold days (snow fell on the highlands in late December and mid-February), but not as many as typical for summer.
Rain was below average for most of Tasmania for most of summer, following on from a record dry spring. A lack of cold fronts meant the western half of the State in particular had markedly less rain than usual. However, exceptionally heavy rain fell in the north and east in the last four days of January, with many sites in the area recording their wettest summer day on record and for some it was their wettest day on record at any time of year (see details in the Special Climate Statement Extreme rainfall in northern and eastern Tasmania. Those four wet days contributed at least two-thirds of the summer rainfall to some areas of the north and east. As a result, Gray in the northeast highlands near St Marys was the wettest spot over summer, with 618 mm (of which 489 mm fell in the final four days of January) exceeding the 521 mm received at Mount Read in the western highlands. Overall, rain was below average in the southwestern half of the State, but above average in the northeastern half and locally very much above average. The total rain for Tasmania was about 8% below average, with no areas having either a record dry or record wet summer.
Sea surface temperatures near Tasmania have been at record highs over recent months, with some patches two or three degrees warmer than expected at this time of year. Waters to the northeast of the State have been particularly warm, with some areas over 21 °C. These warm waters have likely contributed to the record warm temperatures over Tasmania, especially in the east, and are part of a long-term warming trend.
In Hobart, the mean summer daily maximum temperature of 22.9 °C was 1.7 °C above average, and considerably warmer than last summer. The highest temperature was 36.0 °C on 25 December. Nights were also mild in the city, with a mean summer daily minimum temperature a record warm 13.7 °C which is 2.1 °C above average and 0.4 °C clear of the previous record from summer 2000–01. The temperature dropped to 5.0 °C on the the morning of 12 December. The city received 97.0 mm of rain over summer, below the average of 144 mm. Almost a third of this rain fell in just three days near the end of January.

Notes
The Seasonal climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Tasmania using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Tuesday 1 March 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
