Western Australia in 2015: second-warmest year on record; dry in southwest
2015 was the second-warmest year on record for Western Australia. Rainfall for the year was near average when averaged across WA, however, rainfall was below average for the South West Land Division (SWLD).
- Second-warmest year on record for WA, warmest for SWLD
- Mean maximum temperature second-highest for WA, highest for SWLD
- Mean minimum temperature third-highest for WA; third-highest for SWLD
- Rainfall near average for WA; below average for SWLD and eighth-driest for the Lower Southwest
- Three tropical cyclones (Olwyn, Ikola, Quang) and two tropical lows, with Olwyn and Quang crossing the northwest coast
- Spring: warmest spring on record for WA & SWLD
Western Australia's annual mean temperature in 2015 was 0.96 °C above-average, ranking as the second-highest, since comparable temperature records commenced in 1910, closely following the warmest year in 2013. For the South West Land Division (SWLD) as a whole, the annual mean temperature in 2015 was 1.22 °C above average, which was the highest on record.
Western Australia's annual mean maximum temperature in 2015 was 1.12 °C above-average, ranking as the second-highest since comparable temperature records commenced in 1910, closely following the warmest year in 2014. Aside from cooler than normal autumn months, the remaining nine months in 2015 saw warmer than normal day-time temperatures, and five months were ranked in their respective top ten: February (2nd-highest); June (highest); September (8th-highest); October (highest); and November (4th-highest). Consequently, the seasonal mean maximum temperature for winter was the second-highest on record, while it was the warmest spring on record.
For the South West Land Division (SWLD) as a whole, the annual mean maximum temperature in 2015 was 1.55 °C above average, which was the highest on record. The SWLD followed a similar pattern to WA, in that only the autumn months saw cooler than normal daytime maxima, and six of the remaining months ranked in the top ten warmest for their respective month: January (4th-highest); February (2nd-highest); June (highest); September (4th-highest); October(highest); and November (4th-highest). The seasonal mean maximum temperature for spring was the highest on record as a result.
Western Australia's annual mean minimum temperature in 2015 was 0.78 °C above average, ranking as the third-highest on record. Apart from cooler than normal nights in April, May and September, mean overnight temperatures for the remaining months were above average. February (2nd-highest), August (9th-highest), October (highest) and November(equal highest) were all ranked in the top ten highest for their respective month. The seasonal mean minimum temperature for spring was the second-highest on record as a result.
For the SWLD, the annual mean minimum temperature in 2015 was 0.89 °C above average, the third-highest on record. Apart from cooler than normal nights in March, most months saw above average overnight temperatures in the SWLD. February (5th-highest), August (9th-highest), October (2nd-highest) and November (highest) all ranked in the top ten warmest for their respective month. Consequently, the seasonal mean minimum temperature for spring was the highest on record.
The annual rainfall in 2015 for WA was 354 mm, which was close to average, but was the lowest annual total since 2010. For the SWLD, rainfall in 2015 was below average, and the lowest since 2012. For the Lower Southwest (southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Bremer Bay), rainfall in 2015 was 390 mm, ranking as the eighth-driest year on record, with a number of coastal sites either recording their lowest annual rainfall in more than 100 years of record or lowest since 1987.

Notable events in 2015
Tropical lows and cyclones
- Two tropical lows moved through the Kimberley region during early to mid-January, resulting in the record high daily rainfall for January at a number of locations. Cape Leveque recorded over 400 mm (rain gauge was overflowed) on the 8th, which was the 2nd-highest daily rainfall in Australia in 2015, and WA's tenth-highest January daily rainfall on record
- Tropical cyclone Olwyn developed off the northwest coast on 11 March, and tracked southward near the west coast between Exmouth and Shark Bay on the 13th, before weakening rapidly while moving inland. Learmonth Airport recorded a gust of 180 km/h on the 13th, the highest wind gust in WA in 2015
- An extensive cloudband and the passage of ex-tropical cyclone Ikola brought moderate to heavy daily rainfall in parts of the SWLD on 9-10 April. Mount Barker North (South Coastal) recorded a daily total of 100.6 mm on the 10th, which was the all-time highest daily total at this site
- Late season tropical cyclone Quang formed well off the northwest coast towards late April, reaching category 4 intensity before weakening to a low as it crossed the coast between Exmouth and Onslow. Ex-tropical cyclone Quang produced moderate to heavy rainfall in the Pilbara on 1-2 May, while a tornado was reported near Karratha, well away from the centre of the low
Thunderstorms
- 28 January - 3 February: widespread thunderstorms occurred in northern and western WA. A number of locations in the Gascoyne and SWLD reported hail up to 3cm in diameter. Strong winds caused power outages in the Perth metropolitan area on the 29th, and the Geraldton area on the 2nd
- 25 February - 3 March: thunderstorms were frequent in northern and central WA, as well as eastern and northern SWLD. A number of gusts in excess of 100 km/h were recorded in the Pilbara, and daily rainfall totals between 50 mm and 120 mm were reported in the Gascoyne, Pilbara and Kimberley in early March
- 16-18 May: a deep cut-off low followed by a cold front produced severe wind gusts along the SWLD coast and widespread moderate to heavy rainfall
- 30-31 July: a rain band with embedded thunderstorms produced widespread moderate to heavy rainfall over the Gascoyne and SWLD, causing minor to moderate flooding in the Moore River, and minor flooding along the Busselton Coast. A number of sites in the southeast Gascoyne and Central Wheat Belt recorded their all-time highest daily rainfall on record
- 29 August: a convergence line ahead of a cold front produced a tornado in the Bunbury area. Damage to trees and property was reported in the southern suburbs of Bunbury
- 17 October: thunderstorms tracked through eastern parts of the SWLD and the Goldfields. Hail up to 3cm in diameter damaged crops at Newdegate and Dunn Rock in the Great Southern district
- 6-7 November: a complex low with embedded thunderstorms produced record high November daily falls in the SWLD. Spring Valley's daily total of 123.4 mm on the 7th was the 3rd-highest November daily total in the SWLD, and its all-time highest daily rainfall on record
Bushfire
- A fire started by lightning in the Boddington area late January 2015 and burnt approximately 52,000 ha of forest and farmland over seven days
- Widespread thunderstorms on the afternoon of 28 January 2015 ignited numerous fires over southwest WA, including the Northcliffe bushfire, which burnt a total area of close to 100 000 ha, including approximately 4500 ha of private land and two homes, making it the largest individual fire in the south-west forests since the Dwellingup fire of January 1961
- Lightning contributed to the ignition of a number of fires around Esperance in Western Australia on 15 November. These fires continued to burn and became uncontained on the 17th in catastrophic fire weather with very hot, dry and windy conditions followed by a significant wind change. Four people perished in the fires, which collectively burnt approximately 145 000 hectares, including vast areas of cropping land
Extreme temperatures
- 20-23 January: extreme hot maximum temperatures in the high-forties were reported in the Pilbara and Gascoyne. Marble Bar recorded a maximum temperature of 49.0 °C on the 23rd, which was the 2nd-highest temperature in Australia in 2015, and its 3rd-highest all-time temperature on record
- 19-21 February: a hot airmass stagnated in the northwest, resulting in extreme high maximum temperatures and minimum temperatures in the Pilbara. Roebourne Aero recorded 3 consecutive days with temperature over 48 °C, ranking in the top four highest temperatures in Australia in 2015 (highest: 49.2 °C on the 21st, 3rd-highest: 48.6 °C on the 19th, equal 4th-highest: 48.0 °C on the 20th). A minimum temperature of 35.1 °C on the 21st at Wittenoom is the highest minimum temperature in Australia in 2015

Notes
The Annual climate summary lists the main features of the weather in Western Australia using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. Later information, including data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.
A climate summary is generally published on the first working day of each month.
This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Wednesday 6 January 2016. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from
all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site.
They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median
is sometimes more representative than the
mean
of long-term average rain.
Observations for “Perth Metro” are taken from the current site at
Mount Lawley (Bureau number 009225).
Comparisons are made against combined data from the current site
(which opened in early 1993) and the previous site at
Perth Regional Office (009034),
which ran from 1876 to early 1992.
The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site,
based on the
decile ranking
(very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3,
average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9
and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a
percentage of the long-term mean.
The ACORN-SAT dataset is used for temperature area averages.
