New South Wales in 2020: above average temperature and rainfall

2020 saw above average temperature and rainfall in New South Wales. Temperatures were above average across the state in most months except during autumn. There was widespread rain during autumn and spring and in December, but early winter and November rain was below average.

Above average rain

  • Rainfall in 2020 was above average for much of New South Wales except for the far west.
  • For the State as a whole, 2020 rainfall was 14% above average, and almost as much as 2018 and 2019 combined.
  • There was widespread rain across the interior of the State from February to April, with flooding in the Murray–Darling Basin in March from the remnants of tropical cyclone Esther.
  • There was heavy rain in early February in coastal regions, when many sites had their highest daily rainfall on record.
  • June 2020 was the fourth consecutive June of below average rainfall for New South Wales.
  • A succession of complex lows in the Tasman Sea in July, August and October brought heavy rain, some flooding and high seas to the South Coast to the Mid-North Coast region.
  • Rainfall in November was 54% below average, the driest November for the State since 2002 and particularly dry in the northeast.
  • A slow-moving low pressure system brought widespread heavy rainfall to the Northern Rivers region in mid-December, and much of the northeast experienced their wettest December on record.
  • Many sites had their highest annual rainfall on record or their highest for at least 20 years.

Warm for much of the year

  • Temperatures in New South Wales in 2020 were generally above average except in the southwest.
  • For the State as a whole, the annual mean temperature was 0.91 °C above average, the coolest year since 2012.
  • January had periods of extreme heat, increased bushfire activity and poor air quality in Sydney and Canberra.
  • Penrith Lakes recorded 48.9 °C on 4 January, the highest temperature recorded in New South Wales in 2020 and the highest ever recorded in the Sydney basin.
  • Many other sites also had their highest temperature on record in January.
  • At the start of February, many sites had their highest daily minimum temperature on record.
  • Cool and wet conditions saw three consecutive months of below average mean monthly maximum temperatures from February to April, the first such period for the State since 2012.
  • Winter mean maximum temperatures were the coolest since 2016, but cloudy and wet conditions in July and August meant that winter minimum temperatures were the warmest since 2016.
  • Maximum temperatures in spring were very much above average, as persistent anticyclones in the Tasman Sea brought mild to warm settled conditions.
  • The spring mean minimum temperature for New South Wales was 1.99 °C above average, the warmest since 1914.
  • At the end of November a heat trough combined with two frontal systems brought hot and windy conditions to most of the State.
  • On 28 November many sites had their warmest spring day on record and on 29 November Delta (west of Bourke) had a minimum temperature of 33.8 °C, a New South Wales spring record.

Notes

The Annual climate summary, generally published on the second working day of the year, lists the main features of the weather in New South Wales using the most timely and accurate information available on the date of publication; it will generally not be updated. More extensive discussion of significant weather events, along with later information and data that has had greater opportunity for quality control, will be presented in the Monthly Weather Review.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 5 pm on Monday 4 January 2021. Some checks have been made on the data, but it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

In some situations, some or all of the rainfall is in the form of hail or snow. In these cases the totals given are for the water equivalent: the depth of liquid water that results from melting any frozen precipitation. There can be significant 'undercatch' of snow in strong winds, meaning the true precipitation can be higher than that reported.

Averages for individual sites are long-term means based on observations from all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 10 years of record, as they cannot then be calculated reliably.
The median is sometimes more representative than the mean of long-term average rain.

The Rank indicates how rainfall this time compares with the climate record for the site, based on the decile ranking (very low rainfall is in decile 1, low in decile 2 or 3, average in decile 4 to 7, high in decile 8 or 9 and very high is in decile 10).
The Fraction of average shows how much rain has fallen this time as a percentage of the long-term mean.

Where temperature area averages are mentioned, they are derived from the ACORN-SAT dataset.
